1. IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education):

  • Level: Secondary education (equivalent to Grade 9 and 10 or years 10 and 11 in the UK system).
  • Focus: Broad range of subjects, foundational knowledge, and skills.
  • Age Group: 14–16 years.
  • Recognition: Widely recognized internationally.
  • Purpose: Prepares students for higher education levels (like A-levels or other equivalent qualifications).

 

2. O-level (Ordinary Level):

  • Level: Secondary education (similar to IGCSE and Grade 10).
  • Focus: Core academic knowledge in a variety of subjects.
  • Age Group: 14–16 years.
  • Recognition: Similar to IGCSE but primarily recognized in Commonwealth countries.
  • Purpose: Used as a foundation for higher qualifications, like A-levels or equivalents.
  • Key Difference from IGCSE: IGCSE is considered slightly more modern and flexible, offering coursework in addition to exams.

3. AS Level (Advanced Subsidiary Level):

  • Level: First half of A-levels (typically equivalent to Grade 11).
  • Focus: In-depth study of fewer subjects than IGCSE/O-level.
  • Age Group: 16–17 years.
  • Recognition: Counts as a standalone qualification or part of the full A-level course.
  • Purpose: Prepares students for A-levels and is sometimes used for university applications in some countries.
